HYDROSYM: City-Driven Industrial Transition

We are delighted to be a partner in HYDROSYM-2030 ­– a unique initiative through which the City of Helsingborg and the Municipality of Umeå, together with industry stakeholders and researchers, will explore the role cities can play in the transition to climate-neutral industry.

The initiative has secured €1 million in EU funding under the Climate-Neutral and Smart Cities Mission Enabling City Transformation Programme – managed by NetZeroCities – to explore and establish strong public-private partnerships, shape transition roadmaps and mobilise finance to create investment-ready projects that can be scaled across Europe.

For HYDROSYM-2030, we’re partnering with the cities of Helsingborg and Umeå, as well as Öresundskraft, Umeå Energi, IVL Swedish Environmental Research Institute, Lund University and Umeå University, to develop new governance frameworks to facilitate industrial decarbonisation – demonstrating how cities can enable, rather than regulate, the shift toward green hydrogen adoption and industrial symbiosis.

HYDROSYM-2030 will deliver a replicable transition framework, demonstrating how cities across Europe can act as catalysts for industrial decarbonisation – even in sectors where they lack direct regulatory authority.

We’re looking forward to working with both cities and our consortium partners to help them achieve their goals, with an emphasis on synthesis, shared learning, optimising the advantage of working together across two different initiatives and rapidly moving beyond piloting into transformation.
